Title : What’s My Age Again?
Pairing : D.O/Kai
Rating : G
Word Count : 5745 words
Summary : Jongin comes home with Kyungsoo cooking deonjang jiggae and with an unexpected guest waiting for him.
Author’s Note : I can’t think of any titles so I opted to use Blink 182’s song What’s my age again? It has nothing to do with the song tho. To the prompter, I am not sure if what I’ve written is what you’re expecting, but I hope you’ll like it even just for a bit. Happy reading!

It was chaotic, but Jongin survived the day.

The moon was rising when Jongin got inside the pick-up truck after five agonizing hours covering a live report at the court about a man who killed his own brother and family and was charged of murder. It was the hot scoop in town. It was the news that sells. It was the talk of town for two weeks so many journalists covered the hearing that decided the suspect guilty.

Throughout the session, Jongin was all eyes and ears on the hearing that lasted for two hours, taking down notes for his live report for evening news. It was a habit of him to use all his senses whenever he’s covering an event. He didn’t want to waste single information for all the assignments he was given, and this court hearing was not an exception, so he lists down all the important points he’ll deliver that night on the national television.

So when it was his airtime to deliver the news, Jongin summoned his utmost focus and concentration as he looked at the camera, reporting what happened during that day. He dabbled about the vital information the public must know, and answered the news anchor’s questions in finesse and mastery. Like any other reports he had, he was able to execute his part smoothly, one of the reasons why he’s one of the most influential and trusted news reporters in the country.

So back to the present, Chanyeol, his cameraman, finally loaded the equipments in the enclosed cargo area, before jumping inside right next to Jongin who was reviewing his notes from the hearing earlier.

“Man, where’s Sehun?” Chanyeol asked, wiping off the sweat beading on his hairline and on his neck with his palm.

Tapping his pen on his notepad, Jongin turned to Chanyeol and said, “He’s taking a leak.”

Chanyeol hummed in response. He brought out soft white towel from his bag and wrapped it around his neck. “About the hearing earlier, I still can’t believe that he killed his own brother and the kids. He entered a plea of no contest. He just had to say it that he really did it.” Sighing in discontent, Chanyeol relieved the happenings in the court. “Do you think he’s mentally ill?”

Without showing any concern about the convict’s situation, Jongin just closed his notepad and tucked his pen in his breast pocket. “I can’t tell, but I don’t think he’s mentally ill based from his testimony.”
Chanyeol hummed in understanding.

The car door opened from the driver’s seat, and Sehun, their driver, settled inside. “Tiring day?”
Chanyeol pondered on his speculations and turned to Sehun to answer him, “Very. But it was an intense hearing I’ve ever seen.”

“Every hearings are intense I think.” Sehun started the truck to pull out of the parking lot. “It was a mass murder anyway. What do you call it? Familicide? Parricide? But, seriously, that was really inhumane of him to kill his own brother and family. That is unforgivable.”

“He’s guilty, man. But, if he’s sentenced with life imprisonment, that’s not enough for me and for some concerned citizens out there. He should be sentenced of death penalty. ” Chanyeol said, sounding like he was very in deep with the murder case. Sehun, meanwhile, took a swerve out of the local court’s vicinity as he zoomed out to the highway.

“Too bad, death penalty was abolished last year. That man is lucky,” Sehun added flatly.

Jongin, however, kept silent, holding his phone to text his spouse that he was on his way home while his two colleagues were still talking about the murder case.

Five seconds passed, and Jongin received a reply.

take care on your way home :) and i watched you earlier. That was a good report ^^

Chuckling a little because his spouse used emoticons, although his spouse had been doing it since they got married, it still didn’t fail him to crack up a smile and emit a bubble of laughter in mirth from it.
Chanyeol spoke afterwards, “Kyungsoo texted?”

Jongin looked up at Chanyeol who wiggled his brows at him. He and Sehun were done talking about the case.

Jongin grinned and nodded. “Yeah.”

“Did he see your report?” Sehun asked, looking at Jongin in the rearview mirror.

Jongin smiled widely. “He did. He’s my number one fan anyway.”

“You and Kyungsoo are an example of an ideal gay married couple. I tell you,” Chanyeol said with animated hands and perfect teeth flashing into a proud grin.

Jongin graced a smile from the compliment, thumbing the gold band on his ring finger, the symbol of his life commitment with his husband. “Thanks.” He turned to the window, lips curving upwards just from the thought of Kyungsoo waiting for him at home. Thinking about Kyungsoo and remembering his heart shaped smiles, washed away Jongin’s exhaustion for the day.

Jongin came back at home at 9pm. When he got inside his house, blurting out I’m home! loudly for Kyungsoo to hear, wild crashing sound from the stereos greeted him and made him flinch instead. From shock, he clutched his chest with his hand and met eyes with Kyungsoo who was sitting comfortably on the couch, the lights from the television dancing on his face.

The shrilling sounds from the stereos stopped when Kyungsoo paused the movie.

“I’m sorry about that. I was watching this action movie recommended to me and I didn’t hear you enter the house,” Kyungsoo apologized, sitting still on the couch. “How was your day?”

“It’s fine.” Jongin smiled and kissed Kyungsoo’s lips. Then he sat right next to him. He loosened his tie and turned to the flat screen where the paused movie was. Leaning back on the couch, Jongin took a glance at the DVD case on the coffee table, reading the title of the movie Gangnam Blues.

“So how was it? The murder case?” Kyungsoo asked as he pulled out the CD from the DVD player and pressed the power off. “Though, I already know the answer.”

“He’s guilty,” Jongin answered, eyes on Kyungsoo moving here and there. “But there would still be a sentencing hearing tomorrow.”

The television screen turned to bright blue and Kyungsoo shut it down next. He pulled out the plugs from the sockets, and sat next to his husband.

“How about their families?”

“The women’s parents seem to be satisfied that this defendant admitted his crime. They didn’t let anyone interview them though, after the hearing,” Jongin said. His fingers crawling to his cream colored buttons to unbutton them, but Kyungsoo halted him.

“I’ll look forward to your report tomorrow, but before I forgot,” Kyungsoo said and pulled Jongin up from his seat and tugged him towards the dining table after realizing the food waiting for them on the table.

“You should eat. You deserve a scrumptious meal after a great report out there.” Kyungsoo pulled a chair that made a screeching sound as it dragged onto the floor and sat on it.

Jongin sat next to him, eyeing the three chicken dishes laden right in-front of his eyes. From the busy day he had, he almost forgot that he hadn’t eaten anything since lunch, except for two sandwiches that didn’t actually suffice his hunger. So staring at the food on the table courtesy from his loving and caring husband, got his stomach growling, reminding him to indulge and reward himself with delicious food for the day.

In the middle of eating though, Jongin asked, “Do I look good earlier? Or do I look haggard?” he fed himself with a spoonful of rice and chicken meat. The taste exploded on his tongue, causing his inside to tingle in pure satisfaction.

Kyungsoo’s food never fails to satisfy his hunger. Always.

“You looked haggard earlier, but it doesn’t matter to me,” Kyungsoo poured water on Jongin’s glass and continued, “But at least you brought us very informative news. That’s the most important. That’s what the public wants, not your looks, honey.” Kyungsoo snorted and resumed to eat.

“That’s mean,” Jongin said in a fake hurt tone, pouting but playful. Even if Jongin is already twenty-five years old, his childlike character is still apparent, in which Kyungsoo loves and embraces about Jongin. “But I know you’ll say later on, ‘Jongin, you look good even if you’re haggard, that’s why it doesn’t matter’. “

Kyungsoo snorted from that cocky remark and cackled, his eyes crinkling from how wide his grin was. And in between chuckles, he said, “You’re too full of yourself. You know that?”

Jongin responded, oozing in confidence, “And I know you really really love me too,” while pointing his metal chopsticks at Kyungsoo, who in return laughed at his husband’s cheesy antics.
“That’s always a fact,” Kyungsoo said with gleaming eyes. And one more fact, he wouldn’t mind listening to Jongin’s cheesiness for the rest of his life.

After his coverage of the sentence hearing the other day, putting an end to the case when the jury sentenced the convict of life imprisonment, Jongin had to face another assignment. And this new assignment given to him wasn’t as exhausting as the criminal case the other day. It was all about a fire incident at a commercial building, in which he was able to finish earlier than needed. His live report, also, was aired during lunch time as breaking news, so he could go home and rest.

Jongin, again, was with Sehun and Chanyeol. Sehun was driving the pick-up truck and Chanyeol was obviously trying to rack his brain like an investigator to come up with speculations of what the causes of fire might be. Sehun and Chanyeol were too immersed talking about it. While Jongin, Jongin was staring outside the window, looking at the buildings and vehicles that passed by. He always preferred to be in silence on his way home to clear off his head and relaxed himself after a strenuous day he had. More than that, he had texted his husband that he was already on his way home, but he hadn’t received any reply from him yet. Though, he really didn’t mind. There were just times Kyungsoo was too lazy to reply to him, and that day, was one of those days.

The approximate travel time to his house was for an hour, since there were road blockings at the main highway due to road construction, so Chanyeol and Sehun kept on talking to pass the time.

It was during Chanyeol and Sehun’s topic about their marriage lives that got Jongin thinking about the day he met Kyungsoo, the day he asked him on a date, and the day he proposed and married him. It was his pass time for the meantime as they get through the traffic.

It was like a fairytale, written by yours truly, Kim Jongin and Do Kyungsoo.

Their story goes like this;

Jongin and Kyungsoo met in an organization fair in Seoul Arts University. It was during this fair when all the organizations in the university recruit new members for another school year.

Jongin was a member of Seoul Arts Cable Television while Kyungsoo was a member of Theater Seoulites.

It was during a scorching hot summer where booths lined the huge pavilion in the center of the university and students from different colleges checked out the booths to look for an organization they want to join. Jongin was checking out the booths from other organizations with a friend when he stumbled with Kyungsoo who was wearing a Jack Sparrow costume and holding a jar of candies at the front of Theater Soulites booth. He stuck like a sore thumb out of the crowd for Jongin that time.

Unlike Kyungsoo’s partner Elizabeth Swann, who was having the time of her life reciting monologues from the movie Pirates of the Carribean to attract students to join them, Kyungsoo was only standing right next to her, letting some students who pass by them get candies in his jar while Elizabeth tries to woo these students to sign up in their org, babbling about their future events and free acting lessons. When cosplayer Elizabeth happened to convince a group of three students, leading them inside the booth, out of curiosity or maybe because of an unforeseen gravity pulling Jongin towards this Jack Sparrow cosplayer, with just one smile and one candy from him, Jongin knew that he finally found the planet he’d like to orbit for the rest of his life.

It wasn’t easy at first, since Kyungsoo wasn’t really interested to commit into a relationship, but that didn’t stop Jongin from staying with Kyungsoo always, even just for a friend. As a friend, he supported Kyungsoo in every theatre plays he had, lead actor or not, Jongin was always there to help Kyungsoo when he was needed, when Kyungsoo was at the verge of giving up a role given to him, when Kyungsoo was struggling with his studies and theatre plays, and when Kyungsoo finally admitted to him that he thinks he’s falling in-love, but afraid that this person doesn’t like him the way he likes this person. And from there and then, Jongin confessed his feelings at the basketball court where they decided to meet up before sundown to go to the subway together. Jongin had engraved to his mind that utter surprise Kyungsoo had on his face that time. He was stumbling with his words, which rarely happened, but he did right in-front of Jongin. And Jongin’s confession became the catalyst for Kyungsoo to confess his feelings back to the university’s reporter.

There were no kisses or hugs after that confession. There were only smiles and peals of laughter from mirth and relief. It was the most memorable twilight they both had and despite the rocky roads they’d gone through from then and on, Jongin and Kyungsoo’s relationship didn’t crumble at all, which led to the couple’s happy ending that they both had written from their traces of love with each other in which they were able to bring each other to the altar for a promise of forever.

“Jongin,” someone distracted Jongin, cutting him off from his line of thoughts.

When Jongin snapped out from his trance, his lips curving up with dreamy eyes, Chanyeol spoke, “You’re home.”

Jongin blinked several times and straightened up on his seat. He glanced out of the window and found himself right in front of his house. “Oh, I’m here,” he said dazedly.

“I’ll text you for tomorrow’s assignment. Have a rest Jongin,” Chanyeol said, opening the car door for the young reporter.

“Okay,” Jongin nodded in return, and stepped out of the truck. He bended down to address Chanyeol and Sehun, “Thanks for dropping me home. See you guys tomorrow and take care,” then he slammed the door.

Jongin stood far from the truck, hands in his pockets, smiling at Sehun who glanced at him for a wave of goodbye. Then they zoomed out of the neighbourhood.

Looking up at the sky with a smile, Jongin brought out his hands from his pockets and sauntered to the front porch of their house, his gold ring gleaming from the sunlight. Jongin turned the knob and stepped inside the house.

“Kyungsoo, I’m home!” he announced enthusiastically. A familiar scent of food wafted in the air which got Jongin excited and rushed to the kitchen. He found his husband clad in his blue apron, and with round spectacles perched on his nose. Kyungsoo’s back was facing Jongin.

Kyungsoo had his hand on his waist while his other hand brought the ladle to his lips for a taste of the dish he was cooking.

Jongin couldn’t contain the smile drawing his face and his feet automatically brought him towards Kyungsoo, circling his arms around his husband’s waist.

With a jolt, Kyungsoo glanced to his husband, smiling. “You just arrived in time,” he said and pressed a kiss on Jongin’s cheek.

Jongin tightened his hold around Kyungsoo’s waist, without any intent of letting him go yet. “Just a kiss on the cheek? Not on my lips?” He nuzzled his face on Kyungsoo’s neck, having a whiff of his husband’s scent along the dish on the stove that he knew very well. “And why the sudden deonjang jiggae for today? I thought I’ll be home with your home cooked chicken curry?”

Kyungsoo rolled his eyes at him and turned to the pot of deonjang jiggae, deeming it cooked so he turned the stove off. “I’ll kiss you later on the lips, so let go of me for now because I have to put this on the table so we can eat,” he said, trying to squirm out of Jongin’s arms, but failing. “And change of plans, sorry. I’ll just cook your curry tomorrow.”

Jongin pouted, so he opted to rain kisses on Kyungsoo’s cheek instead, but someone clearing a voice behind them sent icy tingles down Jongin’s spine.

“Kyungsoo, is the food done?”

When Jongin heard that familiar tone of voice, he immediately retraced his arms off Kyungsoo’s waist and twirled to the owner of the strict and intimidating voice Jongin wouldn’t ever forget was from.
Behind the table, stood his mother-in-law who he wasn’t expecting to see that day, Do Kyunghye. Shit

That, obviously explained, the unexpected deonjang jiggae for the day.

Jongin’s eyes were wide as they glued at Kyungsoo’s well-dressed mother. Despite her old age, she still exuded of elegance and intimidating aura which always scared him back in college when Kyungsoo introduced him to her as his boyfriend.

Mrs. Do maintained her shoulder hair length. She had more white hair contrasting the black ones unlike years ago, but it didn’t make her any older because of it. In fact, she looked like in her forty’s rather than her actual age of fifty-five.

Dislodging a huge lump from his throat, Jongin briskly, but stumbling as he approached his mother-in-law to give a kiss on her hand as a sign of his greeting. Kyungsoo was preparing the table when a chuckle rolled out of his mouth from Jongin’s apparent clumsiness that only occurs whenever he was around the elder woman.

“E-Eomma,” Jongin tripped over his tongue, still not used from calling his mother-in-law
Eomma. “Y-You visit—where did you come from?“

“Bathroom,” she said sternly. “Don’t you like to see me, Jongin?” Mrs. Do prompted, raising her perfectly shaved eyebrow and flashing her signature daunting smile, without meaning to be threatening. She was normally like that. It was in her nature to look very menacing. Kyungsoo explained that to him a long time ago when he almost pissed in his pants in fear.

Jongin pouted, again, and shook his head. “Eomma, I-I’m happy to see you again,” he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly with a bashful smile. “I’m just surprised you’re here,” Jongin said in between awkward chuckles. “I’m not expecting to arrive home to see you.”

The elder woman comprehended with a slight nod, looking at the table of food, and then turning back to Jongin to give him an eye. “But you looked like you saw a ghost Jongin. You looked paler. Are you anemic now?” she asked afterwards, taking a seat primly and properly.

She was a composed kind of woman. No wonder why Kyungsoo was a little bit like her.

Jongin swallowed down another lump from his throat before circling the table to sit across his mother-in-law and right next to his husband who had finished pouring orange juice on their tall glasses.

“I’m not anemic,” Jongin assured, pulling up an uneasy smile and emitting a small laughter which caused Mrs. Do and Kyungsoo to give him a revolted look. “Uh—“ he pouted.

Jesus, Jongin! You’re a fucking reporter so stop acting like a fucking shy school girl!

“If you’re not, that’s good.” Mrs. Do graced Jongin an amused heart-shaped smile which Kyungsoo got from his mom. “I just want to make sure. And it’s not funny whether you don’t have anemia or not.”
“I’m sorry,” Jongin felt uncomfortable in a second.

“Tch.” Kyungsoo snickered, scooping himself a bowl of their meal carefully from the casserole perched on the middle of the table.

Jongin casted Kyungsoo a frown that looked like it came from a five year old kid.

After putting broth in their bowls after each other, they ate in silence, savouring the food that crawled in their mouths like fireworks shooting a myriad of colors up the sky. Momentarily, it made Jongin at ease as he continued to sip the broth with his spoon while thinking, Kyungsoo is really sent from heaven. My God, this is so delicious.

“I often see you on television. You get a lot of work these days,” Mrs. Do started a conversation while eating. “Doing good at work?”

Jongin made sure to swallow the tofu he chewed first and answered, “I’m good, despite the constant pressure from my desk editor. Stressful most of the times, but I’m really enjoying this profession.”
“We watched the afternoon news earlier,” Kyungsoo spoke, eyes directed at Jongin’s. “You looked good,” he smirked and returned to his bowl.

“You were,” Mrs. Do confirmed as well. “That’s why I get it why my son is head over heels on you.”
Jongin’s cheeks dusted pink. He might be one of the charismatic and confident T.V personalities, but whenever his husband compliments him, it makes him melt and jelly to the knees. And now that his mother-in-law complimented him back, as much as Jongin wanted to look cool about it right in front of her, he couldn’t. He hung his head down to hide the blush on his cheeks and that cute smile he had on his delighted face.

Kyungsoo, right beside him, was amused.

After eating Kyungsoo’s home cooked meal, Kyungsoo appealed to Jongin to accompany and entertain his mom in the living room while he cleans the dirty dishes. Jongin whined a No and asked, “Why did she visit? Were you expecting her earlier, or it was a surprise visit?”

Kyungsoo transferred the dirty plates and utensils in the sink from the table. “It was a surprise visit. And she asked me to cook her favourite deonjang jjiggae.”

Jongin slightly nodded and continued on asking in a hushed tone. “Do I look like a mess around her earlier?”

Kyungsoo snorted and laughed a little from that question. He stood right next to the sink and turned on the faucet to rinse the plates. “You looked like just before you met her. Well, you looked the same as always whenever mom’s around. It’s cute.”

Jongin pursed his lips bashfully from the word Cute, but from knowing that he still looked like a shy little kitten around his mother-in-law, he wasn’t sure how he would take it since he’d been always trying to change his behavior whenever the elder woman is around, but despite trying to act cool like he’s always on T.V, he always fails around her.

In the end though, he ended up sitting at the other end of the couch where his mother-in-law was, watching a show on T.V stoically. He couldn’t say a word. Unless the elder woman speaks to him, but Mrs. Do didn’t speak to him at all, eyes glued at the television screen. Jongin stole glances of her from the other side, but in his fifth attempt, his mother-in-law caught him off guard and raised a brow at him. Jongin turned away, fidgeting on his fingers.

“Speak away Jongin. I can tell you want to say something to me,” the elder woman said.

Jongin looked up at her with hunched shoulders and said, “Uh, it’s just really nice to see you again Mrs. Do.” Realizing what he just called her, Jongin threw his palm over his mouth, aghast.

The elder woman giggled. Odd. She turned to the show on T.V and said, “I still can’t get it why a famous reporter like you, is still shy around me. You were just like on that day Kyungsoo introduced you to me. No wonder my son loves and adores you a lot.”

The laughter coming from the television filled the silence.

Jongin bit his lower lip, flustered from his mother-in-law’s unexpected words. “I love and adore Kyungsoo a lot too, E-Eomma,” a smile graced his lips and his thumb and forefinger traced the gold band wrapped around his finger.

“I know. That’s why I let you two get married,” Mrs. Do said, her eyes gleaming in nostalgia as she recalled how against she was from Jongin and Kyungsoo’s marriage at first.

Jongin smiled modestly, not meeting his mother-in-law’s eyes, but he could still clearly remember the embarrassment and stupidity he had shown to Mrs. Do right back when he was asking for her blessing to let him marry Kyungsoo. He tripped and fell whenever he visited the Do’s place and Mrs. Do would be always nearby to see his embarrassment. Jongin was a walking word for clumsy and awkwardness since then.

Also, Jongin could still remember how he sent Mrs. Do baskets of fruits every week for plus points. He could still remember the menacing glares directed at him whenever he tried to be touchy with Kyungsoo at their place. He could still remember how Mrs. Do asked him to leave Kyungsoo, because Kyungsoo deserve someone better. And he could still remember how he did his best throughout six months to prove to her that Kyungsoo deserves him, that they deserve each other in which Jongin received a You have my blessing, Jongin at the end of the day.

“Excuse me? What are you two talking about?” Kyungsoo appeared from the kitchen with an amused smile. He shuffled towards the couch and sat in between his mother and husband.

“Kyungsoo?” Mrs. Do turned to her son and smiled. “Why is Jongin still shy around me? Is he still scared of me?” she asked and taking a peek at Jongin who looked tensed at the other side of the couch.

Jongin felt awkward from the question, so he stayed silent and chose to listen to the mother and son talking about him, though it made him uncomfortable. But even when Kyungsoo and Jongin were engaged, they were always like this, talking about him right in front of him.

Kyungsoo laughed at the question and took a glance at Jongin. “He’s not scared. Maybe not so really scared, but he’s still shy around you.”

Mrs. Do laughed loudly which surprised Jongin and Kyungsoo as they both stared at the elder woman doing something unlikely of her. “Aigoo, I knew it. But Jongin?” she surprisingly gave Jongin a soft and grateful smile. Jongin’s mouth gaped from the words that sank in his head. He couldn’t believe those words, yet he nodded for the elder to continue speaking. “You’re my son now, so no need to be shy around Eomma.”

Kyungsoo looked at Jongin with a blissful smile and pulled him closer. “You heard mom, Jongin.”

Jongin still had his puppy smile on. He knew already that he shouldn’t be shy around his mother-in-law, but he couldn’t help it at all whenever she’s around. It was just that, how he behaved around the elder like years ago, retained up to this date.

Kyungsoo pressed a kiss on his temple and wrapped his arm around Jongin’s waist. Mrs. Do watched her son and son-in-law together, a beaming smile painting her wrinkled face.

“Sorry. I just, I’m not sure how to behave around you. I-I wanted to look cool, but I guess—“ Jongin ruffled his hair sheepishly. “I guess, I just can’t look so cool around you.”

“Cool? Seriously?” Kyungsoo chuckled and pinched Jongin’s tummy playfully.

“Yah! Why are you laughing at me?” Jongin playfully slapped Kyungsoo’s hand on his torso and whined at him.

Kyungsoo continued on laughing. “Because all this time you always see mom, you want to be cool?”

“Of course! So she won’t take it back that you deserve me and that I deserve you.” With that said, Jongin became horror-struck from what he just said, but he only received peals of laughter from his husband and mother-in-law. He didn’t understand the reason of their laughter, but as he pondered on it, he realized that it’s very different now. He didn’t need to be cool around her anymore. It was given to him a long time ago that he deserved Kyungsoo. He felt embarrassed for admitting his worry, but he just laughed along with them. So in the end, laughter and mirth brimmed inside the Kim’s household. Awkwardness subsided. Jongin’s shyness literally flew out of the window as he watched the love of his life and his mother-in-law laugh in pleasure.

The sound of their laughter decreased, but the smiles etched on their faces remained.

“You’re already cool enough Jongin. I’m lucky I got a handsome reporter as my son-in-law,” Mrs. Do said in a motherly tone of voice she had for Kyungsoo alone. But now, Jongin was addressed too as if he was her real son. “I won’t ever take back my word. You always deserve my son.”

“And I’m lucky to have a handsome reporter husband who even looks so haggard on TV, can still look like a model straight out from a magazine,” Kyungsoo playfully said. He rarely pull up a cheesy pick-up line like that and for Jongin, it was just one of the rare moments and cheesy lines that he would drop in the special portion of his brain where everything Kyungsoo related, good or bad is stored, along with his mother-in-law’s compliments, now, too.

Mrs. Do left when the sun set. The sky was washed with red, orange, pink and purple hues when he and Kyungsoo walked her to the bus stop.

Jongin remained timid around her. Ruffling his hair and rubbing his neck sheepishly, and smiling like an awkward shy kid who just attended his first day of class, whenever he was addressed by the elder woman. It was an amusing picture. On the other hand, he would always catch Kyungsoo’s amused smiles sent to him, in which he would just return them with coy smiles.

Mrs. Do promised that she would take a visit again next month. Even ruffling Jongin’s hair as if doing it on a kid that got him smiling like a kid. It earned teasing from Kyungsoo and from his mother-in-law, but it only made him happier from that kind of affection. The three of them shared a group hug, as the bus arrived and they waved goodbye at her.

Now, Kyungsoo gave Jongin a teasing smile when he climbed in bed next to his husband. “What are you reading?” he asked.

A book about politics was in Jongin’s hand, reading it when he was waiting for Kyungsoo to get in bed. “History of Korean politics.”

“You’re still a nerd,” Kyungsoo laid back on bed, facing the ceiling and added, “and still cute.”

Jongin flipped the book close and shifted his weight to face his husband. He curled his arm around Kyungsoo’s waist and pulled him closer. “Who are you calling cute huh? Huh?” he poked on Kyungsoo’s ticklish spot on his tummy.

Kyungsoo squirmed and was about to elbow Jongin hard on the torso, when Jongin stopped and cackled. “See? You’re being cute right now.”

Kyungsoo narrowed his eyes at his husband and scoffed. But he smiled at the end. “We’re both cute then.”

Silence ensued.

“My mom adores you a lot, to be honest. She’s not the showy type.”

“How can you even tell?” Jongin stared at his husband’s face illuminated by the orange glow of the lamp beside their bed.

“Because she wouldn’t let us get married if she didn’t.” Kyungsoo’s reply.

“Right,” Jongin said, lips tugging into a smile. “She’s really scary before, but she’s aging right now. Little did we know, the moment we wake up, she’s already in her sixties.”

“I know, and I love my mom a lot too, even if she was strict when I was a kid and teenager. But it paid off. I had a happy life in the end because of her.”

“I know,” Jongin laid back and stared at the ceiling too. It was as if the two of them were stargazing in the emptiness of white expanse of space. “I am grateful to her too, for trusting me to take care of you.”

“Me too. For giving me this chance to be with you for the rest of my life.”

Jongin grinned and turned to his husband. “You’ve been cheesy lately.”

Kyungsoo chuckled. “It doesn’t hurt to be cheesy once in awhile.”

“Let’s just wait for mom’s next surprise visit. I wonder if you’ll still act like a shy kid around her,” Kyungsoo muffled his laughter that received a protest from Jongin. “You were so amusing earlier. Mom arrived just after you left in the morning, to be honest with you. She waited for you, because she wanted to see you and see if we’re doing just fine.”

Jongin was taken aback so he rolled to his side to face his husband. “Really? And you didn’t even bother to text me?”

Kyungsoo faced Jongin back. His eyes crinkling from the heart shaped smile he was putting on. “I thought it will be a wonderful surprise for you. And it paid off, because I got an entertaining live show in-front of me starring my awkward slash shy sexy husband being cutesy and adorable around my mother. What a great show it was.”

Jongin glowered at him, but it wasn’t serious. He laughed instead and kissed Kyungsoo’s cheek, and then he pulled him closer to his chest. “And you got what you want.”

“I really got what I wanted all this time,” Kyungsoo pressed his cheek on Jongin’s chest, and looked up to meet his husband’s eyes. “You.”

“You,” Jongin repeated, feeling the same way as his spouse. Out of bliss, he pressed a kiss on Kyungsoo’s forehead and nuzzled his face on his husband’s hair.

Jongin couldn’t ask for more, but this, to be with Kyungsoo forever.

“We should make plans to visit your mother next time.”

“Sounds good to me,” Kyungsoo gave Jongin a wicked grin, “and exciting.”

“Because you’ll have another great show right in-front of you?”

And then the lamp was shut close as they drifted off to sleep.

This was quite precious! I understand the pressures of wanting to/needing to impress the family of your significant other and trying to keep them happy with you, so this struck a chord with me.

All in all its really cute, Jongin's shy personality is really sweet in my opinion, and Kyungsoo is just... An angel. I don't generally read stuff like this TBH, but I really liked this! A lot. It was very good!

This is seriously frraking adorable omggggggg You had me smiling and giggling like crazy throughout the entire story :")))

I really really like Kyungsoo and Jongin's dynamics here!! And you wrote the story in a way that I can feel how at ease and comfortable they are with each other and that was one of the things that I really enjoyed!

It was also super cute to be able to see how Jongin was struggling with showing his mother-in-law his cool side but ends up showing his cute side instead hehe x)) And it really warmed my heart when his mother-in-law talked about and to him so affectionately like :"))))) Silly Jongin didn't even have to worry about his mother-in-law disliking him at all hehe.

This story is so different from what I expected when I saw the prompt!! I love it so much more than what I expected hehehehe gosh. I really really enjoyed your story and I love it so much and I hope you know it!!! A super great job done author!♡♡♡

So this was everything I ever wanted and more! My prompt was really simple but you added so many little things and so many details that added to their relationship.

Loved the intro of Jongin's job, the fatigue that comes with it. I know a few people who are field reporters and I also watch the news diligently (listens to news in the morning, watches news during lunch and afternoon and then the evening news if I can) and it was interesting to read Jongin as one because I can totally imagine him doing these reports, being cool and handsome but then being a total lovesick fool thinking of Kyungsoo during his ride home, remembering how they met and fell in love. It was the little details you put about the trial he was covering, the slice of life quality of this part of his job, and him coming home to Kyungsoo that had me smiling so much.

But then his mother in law comes over for a visit and it was perfect! The shyness, the need to impress, being scared and saying dumb things. You really wrote it so well! I could sense his insecurities and how much he really really loves Kyungsoo. The little details of Kyungsoo complimenting him, being cheesy, calling him cute, being amused... and Jongin always touching his wedding ring... it fills me with so much love and happiness reading all of these come together at the end, when Kyungsoo's mother reveals how she has grown fond of Jongin too. And how could she not, after Jongin showed how much he loves Kyungsoo.

Really really many thanks for this wonderful fic! I could tell how much you took so many things into consideration to make the setting realistic, the situation familiar. I'm happy you took this prompt and gave me a wonderful fic! Thank you for writing it :3

the moment i read your comment, i was so close to tears i'm itching to reply to you but i can't and now i can so i can smother you with my love for liking my fic. your comment really made my day and got me smiling hugely. at first, i'm really hesitant to join the fest but since i love domestic aus and i love kaisoo a bunch and after seeing your prompt, i just claimed it right there and then and wrote it!!! i swear i'm been itching to write jongin as a field reporter for long so i put it in here and i'm glad you liked it. one more thing why i wrote him as a reporter bc i want to show that at work, he's the cool/handsome one but at home he's just different and since you included in your prompt that you want jongin being a shy little fail around his mother in law, i worked on writing jongin as a reporter oozing with confidence.

also, thank you for liking all the little details i put in this fic!!! that means a lot to me. this is my first time receiving a comment like this pinpointing what they like on my fic. i want to cryyyy. i'm so thankful to you for reading this, seriously. bc of you, i want to write more kaisoo fics in the future. you really made me motivated!!! thank you and you're welcome!!!! <3333333
