I'm a mess right now, tears are running down my face. I'm just sobbing. I'm serious. I'm shaking. This is just so so so beautiful. I honestly didn't expect anyone would claim this prompt. When I submitted it, it was just a silly idea I had because the mods were encouraging people to mix other AUs with domestic for an interesting mix. I just finished watching Lucky One and since I'm a sucker for MAMA!au/Pathcode!au, I thought, hey why not? I thought it was too ambitious, a prompt no one would take because it's too much work. I seriously didn't think... but here it is. This beautiful fic written from a silly idea I had that I thought of on a whim. I don't know what to say really but i'll try to because this deserves so much love. I don't think what i say will ever suffice but I'll try.
Let's start with how perfectly you've portrayed their perfect suburban family life. The way you wrote it, the way you showed how happy they are. The normal routine, the one that they've been living everyday for years. I loved how easy it was, how they just went about their morning, perfectly in-sync and perfectly content. I just loved how Jongin knew the little things about Kyungsoo, when he'd wake up, when he'd get the kids. The kids! They're just precious! I could feel how much love they have for each other, the breakfast scene was short but you were able to show what this fest was all about, a warm loving family life at home.
Maybe that's why when the static in their telly started showing messages, and Jongin was starting to freak out, and how Kyungsoo was rejecting the idea of it being true... my heart was breaking into pieces with each sentence. Because I could feel how scared Jongin was, of how much he loves his family that he wants to protect them. When he went home early and was busy researching and he forgot to pick up the kids, that part really got me because I understand how he forgot, how chaotic everything was for him inside his head that he forgot Dosik and Jongshik. And I could feel the guilt and confusion he must have felt, and how it affected Kyungsoo and the kids too.
Because Kyungsoo... Kyungsoo is just obviously afraid, he was denying the truth, what he knows in his heart, what he's been dreaming, what he's been seeing. He was ignoring everything and trying his best. He would rather accuse Jongin of being crazy, he would rather fight with Jongin than admit the truth because he was afraid to lose this life. The perfect life he has with these three people he loves so much. And I think that made it all the more emotional for me, that they both love each other so much, they both love their family so much, that they're doing their best to protect it the way they can. Jongin by finding out the truth, and Kyungsoo by trying to restore it back to normal.
I'm not crying again I swear. I just love how you portrayed their family life, the dynamics between them four, the way they bounce off each other, the conversations, how Jongin and Kyungsoo flirts after all these years!!! It's just normal family life facing a problem that they're trying to solve. Yeah this problem involves mysterious static messages on the telly and their laptops but the way they're approaching it isn't anything dramatic, they still love each other and talk to each other. I just really really love this aspect of the fic so much. Such domestic fluff filled with overflowing love.
And then you give me the plot and the mystery and I'm here just glued to the screen, amazed. I could tell you put obvious thoughts into crafting everything beneath the domestic!au because everything was done perfectly. The subtle changes, Jongin's normal jog with the dogs, the office workers, their neighbors out and about. The little details you've put of the way their "normal" was changing effectively creeped me out, while at the same time setting the pace and moving the plot forward. The more Jongin notices, the more desperate he becomes to find out the truth. When Baekhyun's call came I was so scared for him, and when he told Kyungsoo and he just teleported, and Kyungsoo cut his arm with a knife I was feeling all sorts of emotions I was just wow wow wow woooooow.
